Our 6th graders at Willets Road used the Collage technique to create Mosaic style Art inspired by one of several different Old Master, POP or Contemporary Artists. Students got to pick two artists at random and perform some research to learn about each artist's life and what made their art and creative careers successful. After learning about both artists, students chose one and their favorite work by that artist to recreate the Masterpiece into a collage Mosaic. Students used their iPads to do research, grid their reference images and then proceeded to draw from the grid onto a gridded canvas. After the contour drawing was finished students "colored" it in by gluing colorful, recycled magazine paper to match the Masterpiece. It was a lot of work, and the students also practiced a lot of patience and dedication to finishing them. All students did a fantastic job!!

Studio in Art students are off to a great start this year and just completed the Signed Silhouette observational drawing project. Students learned about the deaf artist Chuck Baird and how important visual communication has to artists and people with similar disabilities. Their goal was to visually communicate through American Sign Langauge and Illustration. Students learned about Line, Observational Drawing, Grid Enlargment, shading, and how to create balance in a composition. Here are a few completed examples. Congratulations to Phallan G. for being chosen as our student of the month for November with her "Quack" drawing.
